November 1 - Cashel and Cahir

On Saturday morning, we got up and drove north to Cashel, which is inland. The drive up was beautiful. When we arrived at the Rock of Cashel, we tried to visit the Brian Boru Center, but it was closed due to us being there in the "off season."

The Rock of Cashel is perched on the top of a hill and is quite impressive.

We had a beautiful sunny day to walk around - but it was quite chilly. Even with our coats and gloves on, the wind made it a cold day.

In Adaline's words, this is a "very old" painting. :)

There is an old church and an even older church on the Rock - the above picture was taken in the little spare space that exists between the two buildings. Bryan thought it would be the perfect area for a cookout - it is an interesting nook that really doesn't have any purpose because of the way the two structures back up to each other in a triangle.

Inside the "newer" cathedral...

Next we went down to Hoor Abbey, which is just behind the Rock of Cashel. I actually enjoyed it a little more than the Rock. It is in the middle of a cow field - Adaline was a bit disturbed by all the cow patties along the skinny walkway that leads out to the Abbey.

Adaline loved the pigeons that were resting on the altar.
To get Adaline to smile for this picture, we had to bribe her with candy. Oh goodness...
Downtown Cashel - where we found some good "off season" deals on Waterford Crystal... :)

Adaline decided to "call" Rah Rah while we were downtown.
Next we drove to Cahir Castle. We enjoyed this better than the Rock - there was SO much to explore. We wished that we had gone here first so we could have really explored all the nooks and crannies. It gets dark here around 5pm now - so we had to rush through.

Adaline loves to pose these days!

Before we went in, the man at the front desk asked us to be careful because there were lots of high walls. We didn't really know what he meant - until we got inside! They would never let you walk on these walkways in the US - someone would fall off and sue the castle, I'm sure. :)
Dancing in the ballroom...

Bryan said these stairs (with a sign that warns you about them...) weren't so bad going up - it was the coming down that was a little nerve-wracking!
We got a little lost driving back into Cork after dark - and I will leave it at that. We probably won't be driving in after dark again. Otherwise it was a great day!
